REFLECTION ON THE PICTURE:

The picture suggests a couple of young adults kissing in the street, perhaps in America, in front of many other people. The male protagonist has an uniform and he's kissing his girl in a passionate way probably because he’s happy and free thanks to the end of World Wold II. On the other side the girl seems to be forced to kiss him indeed he holds her heavily thought his hands in an unusual kiss.
At first sight, the picture seems to be connected with the protagonists of Normal People written by Sally Rooney, an Irish novelist: she chooses two opposite figure for her novel. On one side, Marianne comes from a rich family but she’s unpopular at school because she’s smart and annoys her peers; on the other side, Connell comes from a poor family but he’s the most popular boy at school thanks to football team. The relationship between Connell and Marianne is completely different from the couple’s relationship in the picture, where the two protagonists kiss in front of people and are not afraid of the others’ judgements contrary on Connell and Marianne who have a secret relationship for fear of their peers’ judgements.
Another difference from the picture to Normal People, is that if in Normal people, the novelist wants to underline the opposite social backgrounds of the two protagonists, in the picture it is possible to see different genders and behaviors: black man with a white girl.
Therefore contrary on the picture, another possible connection can be Eveline in which James Joyce underlines the relationship between the protagonists, Eveline and Frank: the relationship highlights Eveline’s fears and her desire to escape from him
