Only You
In the present text I am going to analyse “Only You”, a film directed by Hakan Yonat in 2014.
Considering the title a watcher may imagine that the film will be about a love story or about a relationship between friends. Indeed, “only you” includes a priority in someone’s thoughts, the other person. Another interpretetion of the title may be the film is about a selfish man.
The main characters are Adi, an ex-boxer, and Hazal, a blind girl; during the film the protagonists learn how to know themselves and to love each other.
The plot can be divided into some different moments: o The beginning, when Adi and Hazal meet for the first time; o The growth of the relationship, when the characters start to know themselves; o The first turning point, when Hazal describes her parents’ death to Adi; o The second turning point, when Hazal have to be operated and Adi looks for a way to pay the surgery; o The “truth moment”, with the detachment between the characters; o The new meeting, with the promise of eternal love. There is also the theme of boxing, simultaneousy to the love story, but it is secondary for the development of the plot.
Each part has got its own setting, themes and rhythm: The first part is set in a car parking, at night. The place represent the daily routine of the people and of the protagonists, while the darkness is alike to the feeling of Adi and in contrast with the cheerfulness of Hazal. The rhythm is slow, due to Adi and Hazal’s first shyness. The second part is set in a shore. The most important element is a tree, which grows between the waves: it is the symbol of stamina and resistence. The rhythm is more slow, following the characters’ fellings- they are happy to stay together. The third moment takes place in a graveyard. It reminds Adi’s past. The rhythm grows, like the climax of Adi’s feelings and emotions. The main themes are Hazal parents’ death and Adi’s regret for what he have done. The fourth moment is the most fast part of the film. The setting are the hospital, which stands for rebirth and peace, and the ring, which means upheavel, pain and cruelty. The fift part is the moment of sorrows and sadness, Hazal cries for the first time in the film. It is set outside, in a street: everybody can be in such condition and is your task to notice who feels bad. The last, important moment takes place inthe previous shore. The return closes the love story and the plot; at the same time it conveins the first message, which is love wins against distance, time and lacks.
Another message is that everybody, “normal” or disabled inside or outside, has feelings, memories and emotions hidden.
The language used by characters is informal, sometimes rough, typical of poor people in complicated situations. The soundtrack, by Yıldıray Gürgen, catches the attention of the watcher and its text is suitable for the story. It also helps Adi to fall in love with Hazal in a scene.
