In the present text, I am going to analyze a piece of the script of the Turkish TV series Early Bird, which is part of the introductory episode.
I am going to proceed through the analysis of the director's choices of Can, the main male character. I am going to try to find out the reasons he is the protagonist and how he is characterized.
First of all, Can doesn't appear in the scene; the director decided to create expectation, tension, curiosity into the spectator by the others talking of him. Three employees chat about him: Ceycey and Guliz are worried to lose work because they consider Can a wild and crazy man, then Sanem starts making judgments based on what she just heard. She exaggerates the figure of the boss and makes a parody of him (a sign of that we are in a post-modern culture).
The reader could get an idea of Can's personality only by how others depict him, and it is known that someone's point of view often doesn't coincide with other's.
Can is clearly the protagonist because everyone talks of him; it is an indirect introduction: according to the others he is not suitable to head his father's agency. It was created a climax by the other's description which ends whit his entrance in the scene. It is a quiet entrance, he stands behand Sanem while she is talking nasty things about him. The director chose to introduce Can this way to demonstrate he is the opposite of what the others think. He doesn't react he asks for her name, instead. This behavior states his strong personality, his self-confidence, his rationality, and self- control. Nothing to do with wildness and craziness.
Then he takes control of the situation and orders the presents to gather the workers for a meeting.
He makes a discourse to the meeting, he is clear, pronounces short sentences that can't be misunderstood so he demonstrates he is able to be a boss.
Also, his temper comes to the surface while she orders a cup of Turkish tea, but in the agency, there isn't any. He insists to have it, that's proof of stubbornness and determination.
Can turns out to be a fascinating person who creates curiosity in the spectator, even without looking at him you can understand he is a nice person. He talks with his dependents in a friendly manner making them feel on the same level, the opposite of what imagined Sanem.
Going on, through the showing technique, the direct wants you to make your own opinion on the protagonist.
In conclusion, he tells his collaborators that is a spy in the company and he will find it and then adds a little threat. This problem is the red thread that connects the episodes of the series, which wants the spectator to go on watching.
