Can's Characterisation The aim of the present text is to discuss how the characterisation of Can, the male protagonist of the romantic comedy Early Bird comes to life in the extract provided. In order to carry out the analysis I am going to explain how the choices made contribute to give the reader a specific idea of Can: he is the perfect boss. In doing so, I will consider the traditional elements of the characterization. Since, the object of this essay is to analyse how Can comes to life, the first aspect relevant to underline is that he is introduced in medias res: Sanem, Guliz and Ceycey are discussing about the fact that Can has cancelled his flight and therefore he is going to become the boss of the agency. Right from this consideration, Sanem, according to what people say, draws some conclusions about Can, saying that he is highbrow and a self-conceited person. Also the considerations referring to Can made by Guliz are significant: she states that he is crazy and a wild man; as a consequence he is not suitable as a boss. Here Can comes into the scene, he is behind Sanem and has already listened to all they have said about him. Therefore, the protagonist is introduced by an indirect method:his reputation or better by some gossips on him. Can’s reaction is unexpected: he demonstrates his self-control and rationally. His determination comes to light also when he orders a tea, he does not want a simple tea, he wants a Turkish tea. When he informs the staff about the presence of a spy in the agency and his intention once he will discover him or her, he shows his authority. The initial considerations about him are actually false: Can is a smart person, with excellent organisational skills. To conclude, it can be said the narrative strategies chosen contribute to give to Can the perfect features of the boss.
