The object of the present text is to discuss how the characterisation of Can, a protagonist of Early Bird, comes to life thanks to the narrative strategies and structure used by the director.
To start with, it is important to focus the attention on the quotation given and on the whole script in order to understand and to discover why Can is the protagonist, how his characterisation is made up, the way in which Can comes to the surface and how the reader/ watcher may react according to the narrative strategies used.
The first element that the intelligent reader/ watcher notes is Can is introduced in medias res and this creates curiosity about who he is and about his personality. It is clear the narrative strategy chosen make the reader learns about Can thanks to the reputation that the company staff has of him since the director introduced him without his physical presence in the scene. Can is introduced by Guliz’s comment about his decision to cancel his flight since he definitely become the boss of the agency until AZIZ comes back, therefore the protagonist appears on the scene among gossip. It may be the director wants to draw the attention on Can’s decision (to became the boss of the agency which is in a difficult stage) in order to make clear to everybody which is the main topic. Guliz continues making some consideration about Can’s behaviour and the intelligent reader understands the man is not able to solve the difficult stage of the company; in addition she adds some comments about his personality thinking he is wild and crazy and this will bring the agency to a fast failure. There is no doubt the director’s strategy is to indirectly introduce him; Can is at the centre of the attention still before comparing in the scene since everybody comments about his decision. Consequently the reader will be curious to find out more about his personality, about his decision and to discover if Guliz is wrong or right about Can. The technique used to introduce him is the one of “showing” and it allows the reader builds up his personal idea of the character and people are free to create their idea about Can because there is not a narrator but a dialogue among the company staff.
Going on with the reading Sanem, a girl who have just started to work in the company, wants to find out how Guliz knows Can will be the future agency boss and this also supports the director’s strategy to create suspense just postponing the protagonist’s presence in the scene and this will be the right way to process since everybody are excitated to meet the new boss. Also Sanem comments about Can just listening to the other staff’s member and according to the classic boss idea she creates in her mind. She reinforces the idea Can could not be able to solve the agency’s problem. While she is saying all the negative aspect of Can he appears behind her and the intelligent reader understands the narrator used this strategy to show the protagonist reaction in front of the criticizes but it seems he is not particularly interested in what she is saying; therefore it comes to life he is self control, rationality and a person who don not care enough to people’s prejudices. Can first speaks to Sanem, asking what is her name, which creates a person identity, but he seems not to be really interested in her names and therefore it is clear he does not care of her to much. On the contrary he immediately announces a meeting using the imperative to let the staff know he has to tell us some important decision he took.
After that Ceycey and Leila comment about the future boss, improving the reader’s idea Can is the protagonist because everybody always speak about him also when he is not present in the scene. Up to now the reader or watcher is not able to create a clear idea of Can, since he spoke only a little bit and he is always characterised by the other people; consequently he wants going on to watch or to read the comedy to understand who he really is. Can’s personality gradually comes to life during the meeting towards his words. He speaks clearly, directly using short and efficient sentences. Contrary to all the staff prejudices he seems to have clear idea and projects, to be stubborn and determined. The reader reinforces his idea, when, immediately after Darem, flirting with him, asks him if he prefers an expresso or nonfat latte since there is no tea in the company. But he answers that he want some tea with a direct and definitive attitude. Indeed he does not change his idea. Immediately after he announces his first intention, to discover who is the spy in the company and says that whoever this person is, he or she has to leave the agency because if he ore she do not do this he/she is going to regretted. Therefore Can comes to the surface as a hero who would to save the company, ready to take risks if it was necessary and as the right person who could change the situation. The register creates the character in this way to allow the reader know he is the main protagonist of the comedy and that he has a strong personality that make everybody surprised.
All things considered, there is no doubt people always have in their mind the stereotype of the classic boss’s personality but in this case, thanks to the narrative strategy used, Can reveals his personality different from the common ones. In addition what appears clear is the people always make prejudices of the other people even if the do not know each other and just considering the other comments. The reader also understands the are too many characteristic of Can’s personality that in this extract do not come to the surface. |
