Can’s characterization
In the present text I am going to highlight how Can the main protagonist of “Early Bird” comes to life thanks to the narrative strategies used by the director in order to find out why Can is the main protagonist, how he comes to life and how the reader react according to the narrative choices used.
The intelligent reader notes that Can in introduced in medias res because he comes to life through the staff’s gossip about his position, even if he is not present in the scene. Therefore the intelligent reader is curious to find out the reason why he is the main protagonist, if the staff prejudices about his personality are right or not and who he really is.
Sanem speaks ill about him even if she does not know him. Meanwhile he appears on the scene hearing what she said. The reader may expect him to get angry and dismiss her. On the contrary, he does not seem to be interested in the other’s opinion, to be sure of himself and rational.
In this meeting comes to life his personality. He seems to be intelligent and stubborn and able to manage the company. The director uses the meeting to make the reader aware about Can's personality, which on the contrary is completely different from what the staff expected. Concluding the intelligent reader understands that the characterization of Can is made up through precise narrative techniques such as the meeting and the protagonist’s introduction in medias res.
