Normal People

Chapter 1=> introdurre personaggi + famigliarizzare il lettore con l’ambiente + mettere a fuoco personaggi secondari

Language:

From my reading experience

Housekeeper = domestica

To scold = rimproverare

To introduce the reader to sth

An additional consideration

On the contrary

Tecniche narrative:

Narratore di 3A persona che adotta il punto di vista di ciascun personaggio

=> THE SHIFT F THE POINT OF VIEW => coinvolgimento del lettore senza condizionare il suo punto di vista

  • Mixture TELLING-SHOWING

 Come vengono caratterizzati i personaggi:

Name

Professionà students; housekeeper (everyday routine)

Social background

Reputation

The way they speak/ the language they useà informal

Level of autonomyà Marienne is more independent than Connell

N.B. Vengono caratterizzati per antitesi

Spazio chiuso => focalizzazione sugli aspetti più intimi/ personali

I personaggi emergono anche per i giudizi che si danno l’uno sull’altro

The reader seems to be able to get a balanced impression furthermore, the shift of the point of view seems to drug the reader into the characters’ mind. It involves two main characters, Connell and Marienne, and it starts in “medias res”. The idea of being involved into a realistic world is  well organized by the narrator, a third person one that seems to see the scene form outside. As a result of the narrative choices the reading seems to be free to make a personal judgement. The two characters are presented with a mixture of telling and showing. The use of showing allows the reader to understand that the conversation has an informal register. Characters come to life through their names, dressing style, daily routine, reputation and last but not least from the way they interact, from how they live their intimate feelings. Their use of the language to each other as the content of their conversations sets them immediately in their more familiar environment: they are students teenager belonging to an Irish environment with the personal reaction towards school and home context.

Marienne è più autonoma di Connell perchè è molto meno condizionata da quello che pensano gli altri. Accetta dei compromessi perché le fa comodo.

=>Collegamento con Enea & Didone e Otello

Sedurre = Sed+ducere = condurre una persona in un altro luogo

How do the characters come to life? Through their BODY LANGUAGE

Eveline – Marienne

  • They are both adolescents (19 years old)
  • Different social class
  • Marienne more independent than Eveline

Eveline can’t make a choice => why? Because she doesn’t have a personal point of view on life

Situazioni Problematiche che hanno fatto crescere i personaggi:

Marienne

- Violence

- Lack of point of reference

- No friends

Connell

- University choice

- Popularity

- Scare of people’ judgement

- Different social class
