I say It just begins to live That day
TITLE: “A word is dead” What do expect the poem will be about? 1) Considering the title I expect the poem may be about the death of comunication. 2) I think the poem will be about a form of comunication that is no longer true 3) I expect the poem will be about a word will be never said again. When you read the title, what thing the reader wants to find out? What curiosity? The reader is curious to discover / to find out why the word is “dead” CONSIDERING THE LAY-OUT and TEXT STRUCTURE: Considering the lay-out the reader realizes/ can see the text is organised into/is arranged into 2 stanzas of 3 lines each. The poem consists in six lines organized into 2 tercets , thereforhe would like to understand/ find out the reason why the poet/poetes has arranged the message into 2 stanzas and last but not least the function of each stanzas. DENOTATIVE ANALYSIS: The poem expresses 2 points of view about the life of a word. Some people think that whenever you say a word it dies, the poetes believes that when someone says a word, it starts to live. The function of the first stanzas is to report common people’s idea about the life of the word; the function of the second tercets is to report the poetes’ opinion. It follows that/ as a result/ as a consequence the intelligent reader can understand that the lay-out has been concived to present two opposites/ contrasting ideas about the nature of words. CONNOTATIVE ANALYSIS: -livello fonologico The poem has got the following scheme: AABCDB The first and the second line are run-on-lines. The use of the come at the end of the second line is really important. The last one tercets is a run-on line too. Sintax is turned up-side down in the second tercets: the first tercets makes use a run-on-line, in the second tercets what take place is exactly the opposite. |
