TITLE : A WORD IS DEAD

A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just
Begins to live
That day.

  • What do you expect the poem will be about?

  1. Considering the title I expect the poem to be about communications because there is the name word in the title.

  2. I may expect the poem will be about a form of communications that is no longer too.

  3. I think the poem will be about a word will never be used again.

The reader is curious to discover/ find out why a “word is dead”.

  • Considering the layout the reader realises the text is organised into/is arranged into two stanzas of three lines each.

  • The poem consists of six lines organised into/arranged into two tercets, therefore he would like to understand/ found out the reason why the poet has arranged the message into two stanzas and last but not least the function of each stanzas.

DENOTATIVE ANALYSIS

The poem express two different point of view about the life of a word : some people think that whenever you say a word it dies, the poetess believes that someone says a word it starts to live.

The function of the first stanza is to report common people's idea about the life of a word, the function of the second tercets is to report the poetess' opininion.

It follows that/ as a result/as a consequence the intelligent reader understands that the layout has been conceived to present the opposite/contrasting ideas about the nature of words.

CONNOTATIVE ANALYSIS

The poem has got the following scheme.

Syntax is turned upside down in the two tercets : the first tercets makes use of a run-on-line in the first two lines, in the second tercets what takes place is exactly the opposite.
