Many creepy stories are set in Maine, but in real life is actually a pretty nice place. Katy Evans is the living proof that this state has something good to offer too, she is optimist and loving and because of that she loves her state too. She feels happy where she lives, in a neat little house with her family. Katy wouldn't change a bit of it.

 

She likes to take her little sister from school every day, they don't have a sweet relationship, but they get along. After all they still love each other more then ever.

Katy also feels a little obliged to keep an eye on Jeanette, some freaks have been showing lately that are giving troubles to the calm lifestyle of their town.

 

The Saturday before that a weird cloud of fog showed up. It had a strange reddish colour and a tingling smell, the news reassured that it was just a regular "atmosphere disturbance", but conspiracy theories began showing up too. Katy heard of rumours claiming that that cloud would have killed them all at any moment, that thought gave her shivers down her back. But as I said they're just rumors.

 

As they crossed their home's front door, all they've seen was their mum speaking sadly on the phone. Katy and Jeanette waited worried for her to end the call:

"Mum, what's wrong?"

She hung the phone and sighed deeply:

"Your dad is at the hospital"

"What? Why?"

The girls' mother put her jacket on and continued:

"I don't know yet, come on. Put your hoodies on and get in the car. I'm sure the doctor will explain everything to us".

 

"I'm sorry. But we don't know what happend to your husband".

The doctor seemed disheartened:

"We know for sure that it's because of Saturday's fog, he's not the first case from that day"

Eric's wife hearing those words felt weird and sad:

"Other cases? What do you mean? Which are the symptoms?"

Mr. Davis glaced his patient and took a deep breath:

"Paralysis, but only in the day time"

Megan (Eric's wife and Katy's mother) tried to find more informations into Mr. Davis' eyes and he took a hint:

"In the day time he can barely move a muscle, but at ten o'clock he starts searching for water. He's not thirsty, because when the nurses try to offer him a glass, he stares at it eager. It seems like he just wants to dive in it".

 

Magen almost fainted so Jeanette made her take a sit near to her husband.

She's always been a fragile woman and she just couldn't handle such pain, she then repeated to herself with a wisp of voice:

"Paralysis..."

Mr. Davis left. Katy and Jeanette hugged their mother to make her feel better, but Katy just couldn't leave her mother like this, that was too much pain for her:

"I'll be the one looking after dad tonight. You and Jenny can go home and relax".

Megan was going to counter, but she was too tired to argue so she just nodded. She grabbed Jeanette's little hand and went home.

 

What happend was too strange for Katy: a reddish tingling fog that paralyzed people in the day time only?

She began doing some researches in the hospital, visiting every patient who showed the same symptoms (she knew it wasn't completely legal, but it was necessity), all of them were paralyzed. It was still half past sixteen, so didn't find anything helpful.

 

Katy waited for ten o'clock to come, but she was so bored and tired that she fell asleep. After a while a screeching noise woke her up: her dad was scratching the bed frame with his nail looking deeply into a glass of water. Katy was scared, she knew for sure that Eric's eyes were brown, but strangely now they are painted with a dull blue tint.

 

She jump off her chair and grabbed the glass of water, she knew that if she gave the glass to him nothing would have changed, so she tried something different instead. Katy looked into his dad's eyes while pouring the water down the sink: he screamed loudly, but then he immediately became collected.

 

What was going to happend? Katy was scared that her father could harm her, so she grabbed the first thing that came to her grasp: a broom. Definetly not the best self-defense weapon but it was still something. Unexpectedly he didn't go after her, he just turned to the window and walked out.

 

Katy was shocked, but she was going to find out the mystery behind all of this so she just followed him, they walked down the street and she suddenly noticed that they were going to the beach. During their path they met other people going in the same direction.

 

Once they reached the shore, Katy's dad and all the other people put their feet in the water, knelt down and began to sing and old tune. The sea looked calm firstly, but then it started getting wavy untill a 10 ten feet tall wave showed up, Katy widened her eyes, she knew she was going to die, but she was also too shocked to react. The giant wave crushed on and invisible barrier and a beautiful woman walked out of the foam.

 

"W-who are you?!"

Screams Katy terrified. The lady walked towards her:

"My name's Lilith, my dear. I know you are confused now but I'll explain everything to you".

They sat on a big rock and the lady started speaking:

"You probably already know that 90% of the seas are unexplored. I'm an angel of the abyss and we all live in the depth.

You, my dear, are an ocean creature, more precisely you belong to the ancestry of the seashells. You've been sent to the earth to study human's behavior and instruct your people. We need you".

 

Katy needed a minute to assimilate all those informations, when she finished Lilith ckntinued: "You're fifteen now, you need to come back with me and lead your people"

She nodded but then she declined her offer: "I just can't leave here my parents and my friends".

Lilith sighed and put a hand on her shoulder: "I know it's hard, but it's your duty as the queen".

 

They continued thinking of it for a minute untill someone's voice interrupted them: "Katy?"

Jeanette heard everything and she was as confused as Katy:

"Jenny, why are you here? Go home please"

Tears came to her eyes, Lilith leaned towards her ear and whispered:

"If you go with me, you'll never see her ever again, so now it's better for you to stay with her as long as you can"

Katy started crying as she never did, jumped off the rock and run to hug Jeanette:

"A-am I from the ancestry of the seashells too?"

 

Katy looked at her and then faced Lilith waiting for a response:

"Of course you do, Katy, your sister, is hard to the throne, but you're still a princess"

Jeanette suddenly broke free from Katy and grabbed the angel's hand:

"I'll go with you to instruct our people. I'm only seven, but I learned a lot from human beings"

She seemed so mature for her age saying those words:

"Jenny no, it's my duty"

"Katy, we have to. You are reluctant about your true nature so I have to go. It's my duty too".

 

For a minute everything was silent. Then they hugged each other:

"I will never forget you, Jenny"

"Me neither"...

 

"September 1st, the seven year old: Jaenette Evans, disappeared in the sea at half past eleven. The police after a long research found her body in a cave near the coast. Thery found strangle marks on her neck and water in her lungs. Cops speculate that someone close to her, like a family member, tried to drown her. The suspected number 1 is her older sister Katy Evans, who already manifested violent behavior towards the little Jeanette in the past".
