WHOSE SIDE IS SALLY ROONEY ON?
APRIL, 2012
The chapter starts at Mariannes house, where the two protagonists and Peggy are talking. The present chapter deepens the sensual aspect of the relationships between Connell and Marianne, since they talk about their sexual experiences with Peggy and the talk about when they make love. The narrator shifts from Mariannes point of view to Connells one continuaously along the narration, and this is why it is difficult to understend whose side the author is on. But maybe such impersonal way of looking at the world makes the reader understand that the author does not want to side with one of the two character: it seems instead that the author does not insert personal judgements on purpose, in order to make the reader think and make his own relflections and considerations about the two characters and the context they live in. After all, such impossibility in distinguishing who the author is in favour of is coherent to the Post-modern apirit the entire novel assumes, in which the events pretend to reveal no truth, since there is nothing wrong or right in the world we live in.
