ANALYSIS ON CHAPTER: July 2014

FUNCTION OF THE SECTION IN THE ECONOMY OF THE TEXT:

To present section seems to stop the narration for a while, in the first part. Indeed, almost the entire extract is set in Connells room and it deepens their relationship on a psychological level, since the two protagonists spend most of the time in the section talking about their feelinbgs and about their past. There are no concrete events on which the narration develops. Only at the end of the section, when Marianne goes back home the narration seems to start again throught the violent argument between Marianne and her brother Alan.

MAIN THEMES:

-Private dimension, personal relatioship, interconnection of mind

-How people deal with death in Internet era

-Introspection, selfanalysis (mostly Marianne)

-Domestic violence (Alan = Mariannes brother

WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT THE TWO PROTAGONISTS:

What is really important is the way Marianne and Connell both acquire awareness about their relationship: they continue to consider themselves as friends but they know they love each others, and this is perfectly represented by the inner setting: Connell’ss room, which reflects the interior dimension of the section. Marianne especially comes to a point abouth her person: she reflects on their story and she ends with considering herself a terrible person, while Connell seems to have adapted to the world. Moreover, Marianne is still conscious of the power Connell will always have on her and that she will always do everything to satisfy him.

WHAT STYLISTIC DEVICES DOES THE NARRATOR EXPLOIT:

The stylistic devices used by the narrator throught the narrator changes according to the scene that has to be represented. For example, while Connell and Marianne are talking into is room, the tone and language used change: when one of the two doesn’t know what to answer the hesitation is expressed by pauses, informal expressions, slangs or without answering. The languaged used contributes to create the atmosphere, for example when the two are talking about their relationship, the description of their body language or the most sensual aspects of their actions intensify the tension in the air.
