1. Joyce was educated at Jesuit schools, he studied French, German, Italian language and he graduated in modern languages.

2. he was interested on a broader European culture and this led him to begin to think of himself as a European.

3. “Bloomsday” in his novel Ulysses represent the first date ( 16th June) with Nora Barnacle.

4. he settled in Paris, in Italy (Trieste) and in Switzerland.

5. he wrote: “Chamber Music”, ”Dubliners”, “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”, “Exiles” and “Ulysses”.

6. He represented Dublin because it was dominated by England.

7. he used the free direct speech to represent the characters’ impressions and point of view and the interior monologue.

1. The story are arranged into four groups : childhood, adolescence, maturity and public life.

2. The description in each story is realistic and extremely concise with an abundance of external details.

3. “Epiphany” is “the sudden spiritual manifestation” caused by a banal situation which is used to lead the character to a sudden self-realization about himself.

4. The main theme is the failure to find a way out of “paralysis”.

5. There is a narrated monologue in the form of free direct speech with the omniscient narrator.
