The English sonnet is the result of the gradual transformation from the Petrarca's model to the English sonnet which is generally called either the Shakespearan sonnet or Elisabeth sonnet because it developed during the Elisabethan aged. GRADUAL TRANSFORMATION Thomas Wyattwho lives in the first of the 16th century follows the Petrarca's model mainly trasforming Italian Petrarchan sonnet into English. But soon English poets realise that the English language was not suttable to the Italian model. Indeed, while the Italian language rhythem is based on stresses. This made the transformation from Italian into English very difficult and improved not appropriate/suitable to the english language. Therefore Mr. Enry howard, Earl of Surrey, decided to transform and modificate the structure of the sonnet. This is the way the Elisabethan structure of the sonnet was born.
