Exercise Rounding it up of page 55

  1. The three major battles that Beowulf fights are: the battle which he fights with the King Hrothgar against Grendel, a monster in human shape, the second one is against Grendel mother who comes to take revenge on her son’s death and the third one is the battle in that Beowulf manages to kill a dragon.
  2. He embodies the heroic ideals as he develops from being a prince-warrior in his youth to a wise king in his maturity.
  3. The mead-hall represents civilization or human word, while the outside world represents nature, not yet civilized, but therefore primitive wildness.
  4. The monster represents the devil therefore sin, while the hero represents Jesus.
  5. The three important features of Anglo-Saxon poetry that we can find in Beowulf are the structure of it that is divided into two halves, separated by a caesura or pause, with two stresses in each line. The line structure is regular and creates a strong rhythms. An important figures of speech of it is the alliteration and another typical technique is the kenning.

Reading these words, we understand that Grendel is an enemy of God, a terrifying monster that inspires fear.
