Considering the title, I expect the poem to be about a song about love dedicated to a woman named Lucinda. The most stressed word of the title is the preposition “for”, indeed the intelligent reader is curious about the reason why the poet dedicates a song for Lucinda. The name “Lucinda” derives from the Latin word “lux”, meaning light that represents something positive. Thanks to it, it is possible to orient oneself.

Looking at the layout, the poem is arranged into three stanzas of five lines each, thus the poem displays a regular pattern.

The poem strikes the reader’s attention mainly thanks to its regular patter: the stanzas look total symmetrical and are the result of an anaphoric structure that focuses the attention on the word “Love” which records the title itself.

The title makes clear the text is a song and more precisely a love song addressed to a privileged reciver, namely Lucinda. The reader may associate to the lady’s name the idea of light and therefor something able to be a direction preventing one to get lost.

The noun “love” is repeated in the first line of each stanza, so it can be considered the refrain.
This word is repeated to stick it in the reader’s mind and to emphasize the concept of love.
Moreover the brevity of these lines makes the reader to focus on their.
There is a symmetrical use of punctuation throughout the poem. Each stanza displays two substructures.

This poem is not written for Lucinda only. It is addressed to Lucinda, but it gives a general idea of love, indeed the poem refers to an impersonal form. On the one side the poem is address to Lucinda, but on the other it may be a piece of an advice or a suggestion to everybody.

In the second line of the first stanza there is a metaphor in which love is compared to “a ripe plum”. This fruit seems to have magic properties in that, in the five line is used the word “spell”. The speaking voice use a metaphor for speaking of love. In that love is compared to a ripe plum, that is something sweet and good. To say this he chooses words characterized by open and long vowel.
Thus, with this metaphor the speaking voice wants to underline the how love enchants people involved in it and that one you know love, you will never be able to get away from it. In the third line of the poem is used the verb “growing”. It is gerund and it gives the idea of movement because it is used to express activities, so the poem works on two levels: the personal one, when the poet addresses Lucinda, and the general one, where the speaking voice speaks to people.

Thus the idea of love with which the poet introduces this poem is the idea of an experience of fullness of life suggested by the adoption of a language that appeals to the sense of taste, but also by phonological choices.

The poetry is a song, a typical textual type that poets have used since the Middle Ages to tell love. “Love” is the key word of the text, it is used on an anaphoric level. It also attracts the reader’s attention in its layout formulation. He wants to talk to Lucinda about love though the structure of poetry which is an extended metaphor for love. Each line defines love through metaphorical structures where each stanza presents a different aspect of love. All three are heavenly that the speaking voice says that those who experience them can not do without it.

In the first part of the second stanza there is an another metaphor of love, in which this time love is compared to “a bring star”.
In the first part of the second stanza there is a positive connotation of love as a star. This can be understood thanks to the use of the adjective “bring” and the verb “growing”. Also, in the second part there is a positive connotation of love where the speaking voice communicates that love dazzles you. Here he wants to say that when you fix to something, you no longer have clarity.

In the first two lines of the last stanza love is compared to “a high mountain”, so the speaking voice wants to convey the imagine of love as the top of a high mountain to reach, indeed he probably wants to communicate that love is not easy and that the road to love is an hilly difficult street. In the third line of the third stanza there is an alliteration, where the sound “s” is repeated at the start of the first and the last word of this line. This is made to reproduce the hissing sound of the wind.

Moreover, with the end of the last stanza, the speaking voice wants to convey to imagine that once you get to the top of the mountain of love, the struggle for it is not over In fact, in the fifth line of this stanza, he communicates that you will fight to not “lose your breath”.

In the conclusion of the poem, the speaking voice says that if you are not ready to fight this battle, it is best not to climb too high.

In conclusion, with this poem the poet wants to communicate aspects of love, indeed they do not always involve happiness and above he wants to convey that living love is not easy and implies the will to fight for it.
