Analysis of Love song for Lucinda

The poem strikes the reader’s attention, mainly thanks to regular pattern: the stanzas look totally symmetrical and the anaphoric structure focuses the attention on the word “Love”, which recalls the title.

The title makes clear the text is a song and more precisely a love song addresses to Lucinda. The reader may associate to her the idea of light and therefore something able to be a direction or a gate preventing one to get lost.

The speaking voice in the first stanza compares the love to ripe plum. He uses a full and open sounds, that means love is something good. After that the speaker recalls the taste to make the reader understand love is sweet. Furthermore he uses the progressive aspect to describe love like dynamic, indeed love sits never still. The stanza is divided into two parts: in the fist one the speaker presents the metaphor, in the second one he makes the aspect of love perceptible.
