Grendel's Characterization

In "The battle with Grendel" to antagonist is Grendel.

The poet to connote the monster uses negative connotation.

He came from the moors, he lived in a desolate lair.

Other word or phrases used by the poet to indicate Grendel are: "God-cursed, the captain of evil and the monster.

He is not described physically but thanks to some expression used by the anonymous poet the reader can understand that it is a big and strong creature "greedily loping, he ripped open the mouth of the building, loathsome tread".
