The following text wants to analyse the song over the Rainbow written and sang by Judy Garland.

Starting considering the title of the poem, the reader may imagine to be going to read about what you find if you pass clouds and you reach the end of the rainbow. The reader is also pushed to go ahead reading even because there is much mystery and a lot of legends around rainbows. Indeed, the reader, after the title, wants to read the rest because he expects to discover what hides behind rainbows and understand perhaps their legends.

Instead, taking the layout into consideration, the poem doesn’t display a really regular pattern, the most stanzas are quatrains, while the third is a sestet and the last is a tercet. The reader also notices there is at least a very short line for each stanza, these lines will probably have a deeper meaning.

Another interesting thing about the poem is the repetition of over the rainbow as first line of the quatrains. There is also a repetition between the last line of the last two stanzas of the song. In both cases, the repetitions might represent a reiteration that wants to stick the concept in reader’s mind.

The speaking voice in the text seems to be wondering on a life in sky between stars, however the intelligent reader understands the facts in the song aren’t associated to real life, whereas to the dreams. There are indeed many references to sleeping, such as lullaby or dream.

Anyway, surfing on the internet, the reader finds out that the song was created for a child movie, the Wizard of oz, and therefore the song must be catching and his rhythm sweet.

The poetess wants to live over the rainbow, however not because the sky and the space views are wonderful, but to get free from the commitments of every day life, characterized, for instance, by timetables and traffic. The people aren’t able to relax, they keep thinking to their job, they should take a break and sleep.

In the text are quoted some animals like bluebirds. All the elements create in reader’s mind the idea of a peaceful and quite land, where you can do what you want everywhere. Thus, this image may also be associated to paradiso. Then you reach peace only after death among nature, in paradise, where you can relax, not having musts or timetables. This idea is reinforced by the presence of animals, indeed they aren't supposed to live into space
