IMAGINE ANALYSIS Just watching the music video the audience can see a couple holding hands, who walks along a dark and tree-lined road and arrives to a light and large house where the colour white prevales.
This vision cretaes in the watcher a sense of illusion, indeed we generally associate open white spaces to dreams.
This feeling is also confirmed by the the title. Imagine is the title of this masterpiece and it represets also the key word in the economy of the text. It appears seven times during the song, thus creating a kind of refrain.
The singer addresses a “You”, that appears many times in the economy of the song. In particular what strikes the reader attention is the key position of the pronouns “You” and “I”. It is suffice it to say that they are placed at the end of the stanzas, thus highliting that the protagonists of the song are the singer and this other person, that I suppose to be the girl in the music video.
In verse number one the speaking voice, always using the invitation through the imperative mood invites to imagine the world as somewhere where there are no religious goals (like Hell or Heaven) that creat conflict and on the contray he would like people to be able to live just for the single day. As a consequence the reader can understand that the meaning is mainly made with reference to a contrast to a religious code, which is well expressed by the words heaven and hell, and instead he substitued the word heaven with sky: sky is neutral, it is a part of nature, it is not connoted by any religious or philosophical values. the singer invites the addresse to imagine a world without badness, where people live peaceful together.
Verse one ends with the image of somebody able to live for the day, so without any long term goal.
the singer invites the addresse to imagine a world without badness, where people live peaceful together.
This vision seems utopian for the reader and the adressee and also the singer knows that. Indeed he says “You can say I’m a dreamer” and also “I hope someday you’ll join us”.
This stanza, that represents the refrain, makes me feel moved the most because conveys a feeling of hope, which results also listening to the rhytm of the song.I think this song is a invite to dream a better world, because to imagine something is the first step to achieve it. |
