The object of the present work is to discuss and analyze the song “Peace” by Bethel Music feat.
Looking at the title, the intelligent reader may be curious to find out the reason why the title of the song is “peace”. The word peace suggests a concept of harmony, calmness, and serenity. I expect that the speaking voice within the song will describe what the singer's concept of imagination is
It follows that the analysis of the song is meant to discover the message the speaking voice wants to send and what the song aims to.
In order to outline the meaning of the song, the present work will firstly develop a structural analysis and, on a second moment, will consider how connotative choices add to meaning on the text.
By only considering the layout, the reader can notice the song is arranged into seven parts divided into four verses, 2 chorus and one bridge. Examining the length of the two sections, there is an irregular pattern since the parts. The first two parts, as well as the fourth and fifth, are made up in three lines each. The third part consists of 7 lines, sixth part is composed of 8 lines and finally the seventh of 10 (lines). Other things that catches the eye are that every line begins with a capital letter and there are a lot of other similarities between the parts like the anaphora of some espressions. Among the anaphoras can be noted “When the whole wide world is crashing down” traceable in the third part and in the seventh thanks to his length; “Holds me when I’m broken”, “Sweet peace” , and “That passes understanding” that are also located in third and seventh part. Furthermore the first line of the third part stands out for his brevity. The line consists of a sigle word. “Peace”. This word strikes the reader’s attention also for his position. It is located in the first line of the section. This means that the speaking voice attributes a lot of mean in this word. The expression “peace” recalls the title of the song, is the shortest of the text and introduces the topic of it.
In the first part the speaking voice describes his sad mood using only temporal propositions and simple present that recalls a situation that persist. In the second stanza there is a continuation of mood description and also an other important thing: The beginning word of the last line of this stanza is Your. This adjective makes clear that the singer missis someone and the intelligent reader would like to know who is this someone.
The third part begins and ends with the same word: "peace". therefore there is a circularity. Also in the last line of this section there is the word “your”. The speaking voice says that hearing “your”s voice put him to safety
The first refrain begins in the last line of second stanza. The gentle whisper that reached him, now representing the only thing able to hold him when he is broken and the whole wide world is cashing down. The speaking voice continues the description of the bad things that haunt him but later he feels under someone’s protection.
His song continues with the bridge, that should be divided into two different parts, introduced by the same expressions “I remember who you are”. In this part the speaker pauses to talk about the person who keeps making him feel safe. The intelligent reader may discover that this person is God. Maybe God is the only person who stays close to him even in the most difficult moments.
As for literary devices, there is a repetition. The world “your” has been repeated a lot of times in the song. Poet strikes reader’s attention due to this word’s capital letter. The singer wants to stick it in the mind of the reader because “Your” has some importance. “God” have also been repeated several times (in the bridge it is repeated three times). As well as this, another term that catches the intelligent reader’s eyes for its capital letter You in the bridge. It follows that every stylistic choice contributes to the creation of meaning in the the song.
The intelligent reader can see that the singer decided to use the simple and progressive aspect of verbs that indicate certainty. |
