I WISH YOU PEACE (Eagles)
This song was written by Bernie leadon and dedicated to Patti Davis, ex-daughter of the Republican then-Governor Ronald Reagan. But the intelligent reader can understand that the "you" can be extended to everyone, to the whole world.
This song is organized into three verse and there is no regular pattern in it.
In the first two lines of verse one, the speaking voice wishes peace when the cold winds blow, warmed by the fire's glow and here the keyword is "when". In the next two lines he wishes to the "you" comfort in the solitude and someone that can hold them when they ache inside, when they feel hurt. In the following two lines the lyrical I, wishes hope when they're going through a bad time and kind words when they fell a lttle low. In the last two lines of this verse, the speaking voice wishes them shelter from the raging wind and cooling water to refresh them after a fever. We can see that in every two lines there are present words like "peace", "comfort", "hope" and "shelter" that almost give us an effect of a refrain. The intelligent reader can understand that when the "you" is refearred to the whole world, the peace can be also related to the war beside the feelings that can emerge between two people. Talking about the semantic field, we can see that in this verse emerges the semantic field of warmth and coldness. Warmth because words like "warmed", "fire", "to hold", "glow", "comfort", "hope", "kind words", "shelter", "fever's end" are present that give us a sense of warmth. Coldness because words like "cold winds", "lonely time", "ache", "things are going bad", "times are sad" and "raging wind" are present that give us a sense of loneliness, coldness.
In the chorus, the speaking voice tells once again that he wishes peace to the "you" when times are sad and to find the light that can guide them through the darkness. The lyrical I also wishes that it's "you" can find the strenght to let love grow on when times are hard and the dreams are low. In the chorus, the speaking voice just wants to encourage the "you" to not give up when things get too diffi cult. Here too we can notice that there is the semantic field of warmth and coldness. We can find the semantic choices of warmth in words such as "peace", "light", "strenght" and "love" and the semantic choices of coldness in words like "times are hard", "dark", "storms".
I think the speaking voice through this song, wants to give to all of us a very encouraging message: to not give up even when we are at our lowest and that we can get through our diffiult times.
