Students from migrant backgrounds can face different obstacles primarily related to:

  • difficulties regarding learning the host country language

  • consequent problems regarding learning the other subjects

  • hurdles in their sense of belonging to school and their cognitive and social-emotional development among them and their peers.

Concerning to the fist issue, migrant students are aspected to learn the new language because it can offer them more possibility to communicate, adapting in the host country and build a new life. Indeed, if you have not the ability to learn the destination language quickly, in the first period of residence you will find difficulties not only in the society integration, but also in the basic activities and needs, like buying food, finding home, having information or get help in emergency situations.

Regarding, instead, the second point, students from migrant background can face problems about learning as well as the local language the different subjects for their educational development. Consequently, they can encounter more difficulties than native-born students. Moreover, if migrants students have learning problems even in the mother tongue, they will have more and more obstacles.

Finally, migrant students are aspected to be integrated in the destination country society, so in this case in their new class. However, they are often more bullied by their peers and this can affects them socially and emotionally. Indeed, the rates of foreign-born students leaving education and training early is higher than the rate of the native-born ones exactly because barriers are create between the two groups.
