IMAGINE – JOHN LENNON
TEXTUAL ANALYSIS:
Considering the title, whoever listens to the song cannot have any anticipation of the song. The only thing that can be expected is that the singer imagines something.
The text consists of five stanzas, three verses and two choirs. There is no regular pattern.
Analysing the first verse, it can be seen that the singer tries to imagine, and here the title returns, a world without hell and without heaven. We can also note the use of some symbolic words such as: "heaven", "hell", "sky". In the last line, the singer gives a piece of advice, namely that you have to live every single moment thinking as if it were the last (living for today).
In the second stanza the topic is equality between people. The singer is trying to make the listener imagine a world where there are no wars, states, religions, which then lead to the discrimination of some; or a world in peace, where everyone can live freely.
In the chorus the singer says that people might think of him as a dreamer, and he responds by saying that he is not the only one. Moreover, he invites, or rather he hopes that the listeners will one day join him in this struggle for peace.
In the last verse the singer imagines a world without property, that is, where everything belongs to everyone, without envy on the part of people. A world where all people are united in a sense of brotherhood.
In conclusion, "Imagine" is a hymn to peace and brotherhood among all the men of the world, so the message is "peace in the world".
