When the reader sees the title, it creates in him an expectation, the reader wants to know why the poet associates the adjective ignoble, that bears a very bad meaning, to the word procession.

Considering the layout, the reader understands that the poem doesn’t have a precise pattern, indeed it is in free verses, but it is organized in 3 stanzas:

To the first introducing stanza, where the crowd of people going out the underground is compared to an ignoble procession, follows the second stanza, that as the lines longer and  is used to recreate, also on the sound plane, the frenetic pace of employees going to work in the City of London because  are pressed by the fear of being late to work. In the same stanza the poet confesses to feel humiliated looking at the ignoble haste of these people, that melting among them don’t have a specific identity. Also the use of the expression “wallet carrying “underlines the economic aspect, that is the cause of all this haste. People reduced them self in legs, that run without knowing and following a precise direction, all they are worried about is the fear to arrive late at work. The second stanza ends with the subject pronoun “I”, through which the poet distances himself from the crowd, I isn’t they. The fundamental word that express the feelings of the poet are the substantive “humiliation”, which is in a key position, that is the end of the line, so as to remain etched in the memory and the mind of the reader. The poem ends with a third stanza, which strikes for its brevity,  in addiction to have a value, it has also an epigrammatic flavour, it’s like an epigram, it remains etched in the mind of the reader, with the adjective humiliating, being a progressive aspect, that is a gerund, underlines that this feeling goes on , it doesn’t stop with the vision of the scene, because it indicate an activity.

The message the test seems to suggest is that the humans are pressed by economic needs, as a result of them they lose the meaning of living.
