The author, Arnold Bennet, thinks that James Joyce had both invented a new method and enlarged the field of psychology. He believes that Joyce was a genuine innovator. The influence of Ulysses had already been, and doubtless would in the future, considerable. But he also thinks that he was a wall-builder and that he lacked discipline and decency. He said he would call him the noble savage of the novel.
