The sun rising: analysis

John Donne

Starting from the title the intelligent reader understands that the main theme of this poem is the sun and its rays.

This poem is organized in to three stanzas of ten lines each.

In the first stanza the speaking voice refers to the sun, describing it with negative adjectives "busy old fool, unruly" and asks him how ever he always visits us in the houses through the windows and curtains. Then the verbal tense of the speaking voice changes and asks him if "MUST to thy motions lovers' seasons run" then describes it with other negative adjectives such as "saucy pedantic wrecth", because, the author says that love does not know any season, day, climate or time, but it is immutable. The speaking voice then invites the sun to leave lovers alone and to invite pupils and late apprentices to do more quickly.

In the second stanza the poet challenges the sun by saying that he could eclipse it simply by closing his eyes but he doesn't do it otherwise he would lose sight of his beloved woman. In the second stanza the speaking voice tells of his beloved, describing her better than the sun because her eyes are able to blind those of the sun.

in the last stanza the speaking voice compares her lover to all states and himself to all princes. they are so happy that the sun, says the poet, is happy half of them. the speaking voice concludes by saying that the duty of the sun is only to warm the bed of the two loved ones, which represents the whole world.
