The object of the present work is to analyse the Ballad called “The Three Ravens”
Considering the title the intelligent reader can understand who the characters are: three ravens. The Ballad is divided into 10 stanzas, each stanza has tow lines, The first stanza introduces the setting “on a tree” and the protagonists “three ravens”. In the second line the poet makes a similitude to connote them black coat. After that the poet focuses his attention on one of ravens. The raven ask something about breakfast to his friends. The reader can understand that the raven speaks thanks to the quotation marks. In the third stanza a new character is introduced, he is a knight. The knight is dead, the raven introduces him and also describes is actual status. To increase to connotation of the knight the poet uses the sentence “There lies a knight slain under his shield”. In following stanzas the raven provides a careful description of the knight and also of the dogs who are around him. The dogs are near his feet and they flies him, after that the bird describes a specific physical aspect of the knight: his hair. Finally the dogs were very alert that none dared to place near the corpse.
From the line 12 to the line 20 another character is introduced, a doe. The poet presents her in an indirect way, he explains her action. She “lift the knight’s horse, she looks to his wound, she loads him on her back and in the end she dig the knight near a lake before the prime”. In the end the doe dies. In the last stanza the raven turns to god.
The core topics of the ballad are death and love. Love interpreted in a different way, not love between a man and a woman but love interpreted like sagacity and sweetness.
