English Reading Practice – Don’t Discriminate

Abeni is looking for a job. She used to work as a secretary in her homeland, but now she is in a new country. She can speak the languageperfectly, but her accent is very strong and very foreign. Abeny is afraid employers won't want her because of it.

She tries hard to find a job. She reads all the ads and sends many resumes. She comes to the interviews and answers all the questions. Her manners are excellent. Her skills are the best. She behaves and looks very professional, but still, every time, someone else gets the job.

One day, Abeni gets to a place that she really likes. It is a big firm that takes care of car rentals. All the people there seem very nice. The manager seems very nice. Actually, everything seems very nice, but the minute she opens her mouth she feels like the manager does not want her.

At the end of the interview the manager says, "Okay, thank you." Abeni feels like he is not going to call. "This is not fair!" she thinks, "I can be his best worker!"

She starts walking away when she realizes she must tell him what she thinks. She stops, turns around, opens her mouth to speak, and does not close it until everything is said clearly.

The manager is very surprised. But Abeni is even more surprised. What about her manners? How did she do such a thing? This will be the end. But then the manager suddenly reaches for her. He asks her to sit down. He tries to smile.

"I am going to be honest with you," he says. "I am very surprised. No one ever told this to me before. But the truth is that I feel ashamed. I could see you are a great worker. I should not judge you by your accent. There will be no such discrimination in this firm. Abeni, please accept this position and work for us."

Abeni cannot believe her ears. She feels very excited. She is very happy he offers her the job. But she is even more happy she finally spoke her mind!

Celebr8

WE SHOULD CELEBR8

NOT DISCRIMIN8

LEARN TO APPRECIATE

DON’T PLAYER HATE

BECAUSE THERE’S ROOM FOR YOU

AND THERE’S SPACE FOR ME

LIVING IN THIS WORLD OF DIVERSITY

LET’S CELEBR8 DIVERSITY

Nature has dressed us up

in many shades of skin

the variety of tone we display

is the result of melanin

if you hate your neighbour

because of their skin colour

you really hate yourself

as we are all versions of each other.

People embrace religion

but still they fuss and fight

many believe in one God

so why on earth don’t they unite

there are many different faiths

we have lots of beliefs

so lets celebr8 our differences

instead of crying out in grief

WE SHOULD CELEBR8

NOT DISCRIMIN8

LEARN TO APPRECIATE

DON’T PLAYER HATE

BECAUSE THERE’S ROOM FOR YOU

AND THERE’S SPACE FOR ME

LIVING IN THIS WORLD OF DIVERSITY

LET’S CELEBR8 DIVERSITY

Battle of the sexes

the competition is rigid and strong

women cry out for equality

as men treat them wrong

society creates roles

for the genders to define

I know we are the yin and yang

but we could be floating on cloud nine.

The elders in our communities

they still have a lot to give

you don’t reach that golden age

by being stupid

so let’s respect our elders

to lift their spirits higher

as everyday we’re getting older

like them one day we’ll all retire.

WE SHOULD CELEBR8

NOT DISCRIMIN8

LEARN TO APPRECIATE

DON’T PLAYER HATE

BECAUSE THERE’S ROOM FOR YOU

AND THERE’S SPACE FOR ME

LIVING IN THIS WORLD OF DIVERSITY

LET’S CELEBR8 DIVERSITY

Celebrare

DOVREMMO CELEBRARE

NON DISCIMINARE

IMPARARE AD APPREZZARE

NON ODIARE

PERCHÉ C’È POSTO PER TE

E C’È SPAZIO PER ME

VIVENDO IN UN MONDO DI DIVERSITÀ

CELEBRIAMO LA DIVERSITÀ

La natura ci ha vestiti

Con molti colori di pelle

La varietà di toni mostra

Il risultato della melanina

Se odi il tuo vicino

A causa del colore della sua pelle

In realtà odi te stesso

In quanto siamo tutti versioni di noi stessi

Le persone abbracciano le religioni

Ma ancora si agitano e combattono

Molti credono in un Dio

Quindi perché non si uniscono sulla terra

Ci sono tantissime diverse fedi

Abbiamo un sacco di credi/credenze

Quindi celebriamo le nostre differenze

Invece di gridare dal dolore

DOVREMMO CELEBRARE

NON DISCIMINARE

IMPARARE AD APPREZZARE

NON ODIARE

PERCHÉ C’È POSTO PER TE

E C’È SPAZIO PER ME

Diventando stupido

Quindi rispettiamo i nostri anziani

Per sollevare il loro spirito più in alto

Come ogni girono noi stiamo invecchiando

Come loro un girono ci ritireremo tutti

DOVREMMO CELEBRARE

NON DISCIMINARE

IMPARARE AD APPREZZARE

NON ODIARE

PERCHÉ C’È POSTO PER TE

E C’È SPAZIO PER ME

VIVENDO IN UN MONDO DI DIVERSITÀ

CELEBRIAMO LA DIVERSITÀ
