In 1509 Henry VIII became a king, succeding to his father, king Henry VII. The new king got married with his sister- in – law, Catherine of Aragon from who he wanted to divorce because of dynastic motives, shhe wouldn’t gave him a male heir, indeed she gave birth to a girl, Mary, and because he wanted to marry Anne Boleyn. The Church of Rome didn’t agree with the king, so Henry VIII decided to detach from Rome with the Act Of Supremacy (1534), proclaming the king as the head of the English Church, in the meantime Henry got married with Anne Boleyn who gave birth to the future queen, Elizabeth.

In 1603, after Elizabeth’s death, James VI of Scotland, Mary’s son, went also to the England throne, connecting England and Scotland. He imposed an absolute monarchy oppressing Puritans, who were constricted to leave England and to go in North America: for that they have been called the “Pilgrim Fathers”.

In 1641 king Charles I has been killed by a Puritan, Oliver Crowell, who created the United Republic of England, Scotland and Ireland. The Puritan’s governament made some ludic activities, like the theatre closed. After Cromwell’s deathe his son succeded him but he was a weak king so Charles I’s son, Charles II, came back from his exile in France.
