Ex 2 pag 112

The Great Chain of Being is a hierarchical structure of all matter and all life, which medieval Christianity believes to have been decreed by God. The chain begins with God and descends through angels, humans, animals and plants to minerals. Each link in the chain into which the structure is divided could be further divided into its component parts. In medieval secular society, for example, the king is at the top, replaced by the aristocracy and clergy, and then by the peasants below them. The animal division is similarly subdivided, from strong, wild and intameable lions at the top, to useful but still lively pets like dogs and horses. Likewise, birds could be classified by eagles lordships high above common birds such as pigeons. Below them were fishes, the ones with bones that stood above the various soft sea creatures. Even lower were the insects, with useful ones like bees high above the nuisances like flies and beetles. The snake found itself at the bottom of the animal ladder, shot down, the supposed medieval, for its evil role in the Garden of Eden. Below the animals came plants, ranging from the useful strong oak tree above to the supposedly demonic yew tree below. Cultivated plants were also ranked from highest to lowest.
Minerals were also classified, from useful metals, to rocks, to soil.
