Exercise 2

The core idea behind the vision known as “the great chain of being” is the hierarchical system that characterizes all the universe. For example, there is an order that puts on the top God, followed by Angels, human, beasts, plants and minerals. To sum up, everything imaginable has a specific place and rank, which gives order and meaning to the entire universe. If disorder is broken, chaos and catastrophes will follow, as we can see, for example, in many Shakespearean tragedies.

DOC 5- DOC 6

Exercise 1

  1. The Spanish advance and Mary, queen of Scots, who wanted to became Queen of England
  2. Spain, England, Scotland and France
  3. Mary was tried on 15 October 1586 on charges of high treason.

Exercise 2

Ab) Elizabeth is depicted in sumptuous and ornate clothes. The decorations on the dress are mainly red or gold, and match her hair and pale face perfectly. Around her neck she has a sort of cylindrical fan for decoration. The dress covers her completely, leaving only her hands and face visible. In addition, the dress is very voluminous and gives a very large image of the woman.

From this image we can also see how the symbols of power have changed. Elizabeth is wearing precious jewellery and is probably seated on a throne, the symbol of royal power. She also has a crown on her head, which is a further indication of her power.

Exercise 3

  1. Elizabeth declares herself to be a mere woman in appearance, but she possesses the soul and virtues of a king. That is why any country attempting an attack on England will be repulsed by arms and she will be general of the fight.
  2. Elizabeth reassures her people that she is ready to fight even with weapons if necessary and will thank all those who participate in the war. She also says that she does not want to live to distrust her loyal and loving people.
