Considering the title, the reader asks himself the reason why the poet says "Do not go gentle into that good night". Further the title suggestes thet is an instruction or order, because the verb "Do not" is in imperative form. The poem is arranged into 6 stanzas. It displays a regular pattern : the stanzas, without the last one, are tercets. Further there are two refrain, that are "Do not gi gentle into that good night" and "Rage, Rage against the dying of the light". The poem follows a rhyme scheme ABA, but in the last stanza it is ABAA. It adds to last stanza importance, because it tells about the poet's father. In the poeam there are two important metaphor, that are "nitgh" and "day". "Night" means death, while "day" means life. Every stanzas have a different subject and the speaking voice tells about specific part of their life: death. So every stanza is connected by the theme of deat. The poem was written from the poet to his dying father. The reader understand it in the last stanza. The message conveyed by the poem is you do not go gentle , but you must rage, you must fight against the death. |
