How do schoolwork and the projects we are carrying out contribute to the implementation of the Lisbon Strategy?

The primary aim of the Lisbon Strategy is “to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world”.

As a consequence, schools play a main role in the achievement of the goal. As the Education and Training Minister of the EU Juan Figel said, “education and training are crucial for the future of the European Union. High quality and accessible education is essential for all citizens to contribute to the building of a European knowledge society.”

But what have we done in order to implement the Lisbon Strategy?

As a school class of the EU, we have adopted some of the objectives of the Strategy.

To be precise:

  • Ensuring access to ICT for everyone
  • Improving foreign language learning
  • Creating an open learning environment
  • Developing the spirit of enterprise

As regards the implementation of ICTs, ECDL courses are provided to all students. What’s more, we have developed our computer skills by using the latest forms of communication (forum, blog, wiki) during the English lessons.

Therefore, foreign language learning has been developed along with ICTs.

In order to enhance our conversational abilities in a foreign language, an exchange project (Garden of Eden) with the Belgian school of Saint Dimpna has been carried out. Garden of Eden is a Comenius school project. As written in the GOE website, “The participating schools cover a big part of Europe, which makes us European messengers and spokesmen.”

As regards the development of the spirit of enterprise, “Progetto Imprenderò - Officina Studenti” offers a view of the world of enterprise through the creation of an innovative product or service.

Last year, the product created (a design t-shirt) was advertised on the website created by one of the students, Marco Maran.

Last but not least, projects have been carried out to provide information about the European Union.

We first compared the main institutions of both Italy and the EU, in relation to their members, functions and relationships with other institutions. (“Education to New Europe” project).

Then, we created power-points and linotypes about the EU (“European Citizenship” Project).

Last but not least, we have studied the Lisbon Strategy and the possible future of the EU (“Conoscere l’Europa, fare gli Europei” project). All Projects are about knowing the European Union and Becoming European Citizens.

We all are EU citizens. Therefore, knowledge of Europe is a must and we have to work hard to contribute to the implementation of the Lisbon Strategy.
