In this essay I have the intention to analyze the short story of J.Joyce's Eveline. The story is set in outskirts of Dublin and tells about a teenager from working class.
The narrator is a third person omniscient narrator, who tells the story from his and Eveline's point of view.
The first thirteen lines tells the story from the narrator's point of view, who uses the language of sense (smell, hearing) to create the setting: the atmosphere is already suffocating and this is conveyed by adjectives and nouns like “cretonne” and by war's words like “to invade”.
In the second part the narrator speaks from Eveline's point of view and the reader comes to know her reputation, her job, her family, her religious and her indecitions.
Eveline is afraid by unknown and she doesn't want to risk on something that she isn't sure.
Joyce conveyed in all sotry a suffocating atmosphere, which is underlined by her thoughts and her behaviour. Eveline is a passive person, who prefers to stay in a knowed world, instead of to change radically her life.
