DISCUSS the role of seduction in the extract and explain how language and style add to the meaning.
[Ulysses(1922), James Joyce, Chapter 13]
Gertry is seduced by Leopold, he who, without willing, seduces her with his gaze.
She thinks that "there was a meaning in his look" and she felt as It (the look) "read her very soul".
On the denotative level Leopold watched Gertry because the ball he hit to give it back to the twins, fall near the girl's feet. There is no intention "to read her very soul" and he had no interest on her.
On the contrary, following Gertry's chain of thoughts , the reader realizes that the girl moves from a look to a life together with Leopold attributing to a look more meaning than it has.
She is sure that "It was him", "he was like no-one-else", and she hopes "he truly loved her". She desired to be "his ownest girlie".
The language used belongs to the semantic field of heart and emotions, as the previous quotations prove.
The omniscient narrator tells the girl's thoughts using the third person that adds veracity to the text. The reader feels as the narrator didn't filter events: he provides to show him how Gertry feels, how she appears ("she was glad", "there was joy on her face"), what are Leopold's intentions and how she interprets Leopold's gaze.
The narrator provides the reader of a multifaceted vision of the situation that permits the reader to understand how the process of seduction works.
