Ex. 3 page 65

A new study of “happy western teenagers” is now available. It tells us why these happy people are happy. Happy and optimistic teenagers spend a lot of their time with family and friends. They always have dinner with their family, and never eat alone. They often have a cup of coffee or tea with a parent, or brother or sister, or other relative, and chat about their day. They usually spend at least one evening per week with friends, at home or doing something together such as going to the cinema. They usually study regularly, and don’t allow homework to build up. This results in low stress levels at school. Do they eat at least one good meal a day? Yes, they do! They rarely snack or skip meals, and they always try to eat fruit and vegetables. Most teenagers are usually sporty. Surprisingly, their healthy diet comes with some unhealthy habits: many teenagers occasionally smoke, and some admit that they often smoke. They say they are not worried about the health problems that smoking can cause.

Ex. 4 page 66

But apart from going to the cinema, what do today’s teenagers like doing in their free time? The teenagers we interviewed say they often go for a walk in town with their friends, window shopping or looking at the latest fashions. They usually stop in a café and always enjoy the opportunity to relax and chat. They sometimes do sport, but this varies a lot. For example, some teenagers usually do sport three or four times a week, if they are part of a team or association like a football, basketball or judo club. They rarely go to the swimming pool. But some teenagers don’t like sport, and don’t do it. Many teenagers listen to music or watch films alone or with their friends. They often listen to CDs and regularly download music on their computers at home. They often speak to friends on their mobile phones and sometimes spend an hour sending text messages to them. They sometimes read, occasionally write, but the majority prefers films to books.

INTERVIEWER

Tom, first of all, obliviously you like blogging. But why? Why is so popular in your opinion?

TOM

I really like the contact with I have with other people, and I love writing.

INTERVIEWER

So how do you know other people read you?

TOM

Easy! Two things. First, the comments. On a blog, people can leave a comment about your writing. I like the comments, they give me an idea of what is good and what isn’t. Second a counter!

INTERVIEWER

A counter? What’s that?

TOM

It is a little tool you put in your blog and it literally counts the number of people who visit you. It’s great checking my visitors every day.

INTERVIEWER

So, what’s your blog like?

TOM

There are stories, poetry and articles about current affairs.

INTERVIEWER

And do you like reading other blogs?

TOM

Of course! That’s part of fun.

INTERVIEWER

Any plans to change or develop your blog?

TOM

I’d like to improve the graphics, but that’s complicated. I’m not a software programmer! I like taking photos so I could put more interesting photos on my blog. But that all takes time.

How are you? I’m writing from London, where I’m staying for a month in a language school. I go to English class every day from 9 to 12, and then I study in the afternoon for 3 more hours. There are 20 students from all over the world in the class and I make new friends every day. I also take drama classes in the evening and it’s very exciting.

The city is great. I’m having a wonderful time with some Spanish friends, Ramon and Julia. They attend the same school, but only 3 days a week.

Are you enjoying your holidays in France?

Lots of love, Maria.

CHILDREN’S CLUB

We are group of young people who want to help children aged 4 to 10.

When do we meet? In the afternoon and on Saturdays.

We help children spend their time doing something useful and creative – and not watching TV. Your child can make a lot of friends at the children’s club.

THE ACTIVITIES

We love helping children do creative activities. We do drawing and painting and when necessary we help children do their homework. We plan to make calendars and plant pots this year, two interesting activities that also help children learn about time and season, and about basic biology.

We also hope to make simple food. We don’t have an oven, so we plan to make sandwiches, salads and simple desserts. This help children learn about nutrition.

We plan to do some sport, especially team games.

We hope to spend at least two hours per week doing drama activities, and at the end of the school year we intend to put on a show with the children as stars.

Daniel Brown is 17 years old and is spending a lot of time alone. Daniel loves rock – climbing, and is planning to climb a 300 – metre high rock face near his home for charity. He’s preparing to do the climb by getting fit. Every day he likes doing a five-mile run and then an hour of stretching. This is very important for his strength and for the unusual movements he does when climbing. He likes swimming too, and enjoys going to the local pool at the weekend. Daniel hopes to spend the winter months getting fit, and then a month in spring practicing the climb with other experts. Then in June he intends to do the climb in front of spectators. He wants to do a sponsored climb and make money for charity. Daniel’s chosen charity is the British Heart Foundation. Daniel feels it is important for healthy people to do everything possible to help the sick.

Interviewer

Dr. Harper, are you worried about the popularity of video games with teenagers today?

Dr Harper

A little, yes. If people play video games for just a couple of hours a week, there’s no problem. But when they need to play them every day for hours, this is an addiction. It’s one thing to like playing them, another to need to play them.

Interviewer

So what are the signs of an addiction?

Dr Harper

If a person stops going out with friends, this is an important sign. Look for a person who wants to spend a lot of time alone and who likes staying at home all day. Another problem is when a person can’t concentrate. Look for students who stop listening in class, who start getting physically agitated and restless quickly. Obviously their homework and their grades generally suffer too.

Interviewer

What other signs are there?

Dr Harper

People tend to eat badly. They try to get away from the table quickly. They don’t pay attention when you speak them and have difficulty making conversation.

Interviewer

What do you advise family and friends doing if they suspect an addition?

Dr Harper

I suggest talking to the person about it, and trying to make them see the problem. If this doesn’t work, I advise the family making an appointment with an expert who can evaluate the situation.
