Textual analysis of James Joyce's “Eveline”

The title refers to the name of the main character of the story: Eveline. In the first two lines is described the setting of the first scene of the novel: Eveline is at the window in her house, as a matter of fact the first part of the novel is set in her house. Here the main character starts to remember her past. Towards memory the discrepancy between past and present is emphasized. The past appears different from present to Eveline because she escapes from her house. As a matter of fact she wants to go to Buenos Aires with Frank, her lover. What Eveline is intended to do is told towards her consciousness adopting the interior monologue technique.

The second scene is completely detached from the first scene. In the second scene Frank that wait for Eveline at the harbour is described. In this part of the text, as for the first part, the action is reduced to the minimum. As a matter of fact the story appears static and it is characterize with the final scene too. In the scene Eveline stay immobile. She does not leave Dublin with Frank, who is got on the ship.
