MEMBERS OF THE POLICE

 

Carabiniere Bacci--> He was a young and inexperienced policeman and he was training to be a police officer.
The Marshal Salvatore Guarnaccia--> He was from Sicily and Carabiniere Bacci did not like him because he suspected that he was friendly with the Sicilian Mafia. The Marshal was not well-educated but he was wise and sympathetic.
The Captain--> He was careful and correct, he was the perfect police officer and he told Bacci off for his bad English.
Chief Inspector Lowestoft--> He was in Florence to prevent any trouble for the Langley-Smythe family.
Inspector Jeffreys--> He helped the Chief Inspector Lowestoft to prevent any trouble for the Langley-Smythe family.

 

PEOPLE WHO LIVED IN THE FLAT WHERE THE ENGLISHMAN DIED

 

Mr. Langley-Smithe--> He was the English victim that Cipolla found. He lived in a miserable little ground floor.
R. Cesarini--> He was an Antique-Dealer; he was also the owner of the most of the flats and he offered the Englishman a rent free flat.
The Cipriani--> In this family there were 4 people: Mr. Cipriani, Miss. Cipriani, Giovanna and her older sister. Giovanna was very important for the investigation because she heard two bangs in that night.
Martha--> She was the Cipriani's maid and she has been shot in front of Carabiniere Bacci.
The judge and his housekeeper--> They lived in a flat on the first floor but they told nothing to Carabiniere Bacci.
The Fredianis--> They lived on the top floor but they were not at home because they had gone to America to spend Christmas.
Miss. White--> She was an English lady of about sixty, she had turned a flat into a little museum about Landor. Landor was a poet who was born in 1775 and who died in 1864.

Gianpaolo Maria Cipolla--> He was the cleaner of the flat; he found the Englishman's body the same night that he lost his wife. He was the murderer.
The night-guard--> He was the dark figure that Carabiniere Bacci saw when he was going to the Englishman's flat.
Milena--> She is Cipolla's wife and she was very ill.She died the same night of the Englishman.
Cipolla's sister--> She was married and she lived next door to the Marshal.

TOPPICH

 

The book speak about an Englishman who died in a night; he was shooted in the left of his back. Carbinere Bacci with the Marshal, the Captain and two English Inspector were involeved in this case. Finally they found the murderer. It was the cleaner Cipolla; he was angry and he shooted him to get his own back on his wife.

 

THEMES

 

LOVE: The love is one of the themes of this book because Cipolla worked always only to earn money to pay the operation of his wife; his wife was very ill.

FRIENDSHIP: The friendship is one of the themes of this book because the Marshal was a good friend for Cipolla; he was very friendly with him and he also went to the funeral of Cipolla's wife.

REVENGE: The revenge is one of the theme of this book because Cipolla shooted the Englishman; he did it because Langley-Smithe did not pay his wife when she worked for him.


MESSAGE

 

This book teach that people can kill someone to get his own back even if they do not want that. For example Cipolla killed Langley-Smithe for revenge but he did not want to do that because he remembered all only at the end of the story.
