Hard Times(1854) by Charles Dickens

The passage describes a fictional town, Coketown. It was the town of brick. Dikens focused on problem  and dangers of the new industrial town. He said that the town had an red and black unnatural. He wants to underline the pollution of the town. The rivers were red and black and the chimneys released interminable serpents of smoke. Moreover he wanted to describe the monotony of the architecture and of life. The streets were all equal, and people lived the same life, doing the same things. The day didn't change. The man became a machine. Every building or thing had to be severely workful. The church that was overage for the production became important to workers and masters. The people could pry god for a good future. On the other hand the masters could salve one's conscience.
