Title: Far From The Madding Crowd
Publishing House: Oxford Bookworms Library
Year of Publication: 1874
Author: Thomas Hardy
Topic: The most important theme is the love of three men for the same young, proud and independent woman.
Narrator: There is a third person omniscient narrator which is external. He knows everything about characters: he is also aware of what they do not know.
Idioms: "Last but not least"; "thank you a thousand times"; "only God knows";
Language used: The language used by the narrator is not elevated and complicate because it is spoken by illiterate farmers.
Overall effects of the language used: Thanks to the simple language used and the semantic field of farm, the reader feels as if he were a character who lives in English countryside.
Balance between narration and dialogue: Narrative parts are balanced with dialogues because the speaking voice tells us what characters do while he reports their conversations adopting free direct speech.
Message of the story: The reader is informed about the power of love that can change the balance of an ordinary person's life.
