I discovered Chesil Beach when I had read the homonymous book.

Chesil Beach is on the Dorset coast, a country in South East England on the English Channel coast. It is sometimes called Chesil Bank, it is one of three major shingle structures in Britain.

Its etymology is derived from the Old English ceosel or cisel, meaning "gravel" or "shingle".

The beach is a thin tongue of earth surrounded by water and behind it there is the Fleet lagoon. It is a shingle beach, not a common sandy beach.
