The Novel is a work of narrative fiction, written in prose.
It took shape in Britain in the 18th Century.
The factors that were of particular importance for the rise of the Novel are:
- Ø Journalisms, whose aim was to record the facts of daily living and to instruct people.
- Ø Other literally forms like Biographies, Diaries, etc...
- Ø The rise of the Middle Class: in fact the novel can be consider the projection of the Middle Class because it was born in the period of the rise of a new Middle Class, and in order to establish their power, they needed to provide an appropriate education. As a consequence, the demand of reading material increased.
- Ø The Novel also reflected the rationalist spirit of the Age of Reason, because in this period Reason prevailed over imagination. So, Novels needed to pretend to be real stories in order to be accepts by the audience.
