The extract is taken from "Pamela", a novel written by Samuel Richardson.

It is an epistolary novel because it is arranged into letters that Pamela writes to her parents.

I am going to discuss letter XXI:

It is a letter written by Pamela, a young girl who is a maid-servant at the house of a nobleman, to her parents.

In this letter she explains them the situation: after the death of her Mistress, her son tries to seduce Pamela and she is afraid for her Master behaviour towards her.

In the letter Pamela tells, also, about another important character: Mr Jervis, who is a servant and a Pamela's friend. They have a very friendly relationship.

The reader can understand the interest of her Master and through Pamela's actions and words, the intelligent reader, can also understand that she is happy for this attention.
