Tom Jones - text one
Exercise 1
•1) Suddenly Sophia's horse began to prancing and capering. She was in danger.
•2) Tom saw the situation and immediately helped Sophia. Jones caught Sophia in his arms.
•3) Tom's behaviour impressed Sophia.
Exercise 2
The last part of the chapter is excluded. In this part appears Mr Western, who is not quoted in the summary. In addition, in the summary the narrator refers only to Jones' noble behaviour and not to the physical consequences he has to suffer.
Exercise 3
The introduction can not be considered a complete summary because some events are not mentioned. It creates certainly a sense of expectation in the reader but his main function is to give opinions and judgements about the characters.
Exercise 4
Tom Jones: he is a generous man who helps the lady he is in love with. He is also courageous and altruist.
Sophia: she is a strong lady who accepts to ride a horse. She is impressed about Tom's behaviour but is afraid about his physical conditions. She is emotional but obedient towards her father.
Mr Western: this character appears only in the end of the chapter. It is difficult to understand well his characteristics.
The characters in this chapter are revealed trough the technique of telling. This means that the narrator tells the reader the characters' actions and filters the information, which comes no directly to the reader.
Exercise 5
In this extract the narrator is omniscient.
