The History of
Tom Jones, a Foundling

EXERCISE 1

1)What the "dreadful Accident" is = While Sophia was returning from the chase (it was the second day of her hunting) her horse fell suddenly to prancing and capering and she was in the most eminent peril of falling.

2)What "the gallant behaviour of Jones" is = Tom Jones saw the dangerous situation and immediately galloped up to her assistance. Jones caught Sophia in his arms.

3)What the "Dreadful consequence of that Behaviour to the young Lady" is = The courageous behaviour of Jones made a deep impression on Sophia's heart.

EXERCISE 2

In the summary there are not information about Mr Western, who is involved in the story at the end of the chapter.

EXERCISE 3

What function do you think the summary fulfils?
a)it gives a summary of the main events in the chapter

b)it creates expectations as to further developments in the plot

In the summary there are only the main events of the chapter. There are not a lot of information or details because probably Henry Fielding wants to create curitosity and suspence.

EXERCISE 4

a)Tom is a young man who is very courageous, generous, kind and altruist. Sophia is a strong young woman because she accepts to ride and to hunt. But she is also afraid for the dangerous situation and also for the physical conditions of Tom: she is frail and emotional. Sophia is also very obedient towards her father, Mr Western. It seems as if he were a selfish person because for example he is not worried for Tom's conditions but he thinks only about his daughter.

b)The characters of Tom, Sophia and Mr Western are revealed through telling.

EXERCISE 5

The point of view = omniscient narrator
