FINDING OUT ABOUT CHESIL BEACH
Where is Chesil Beach?
Chesil Beach is in the Dorset coast, in South Grain Britain.
Dorset is a country in South West England .Chesil Beach is also one of three major shingle in England .
What does its name mean?
Its name derived from the Old English "ceosel" or "cisel", meaning "gravel" or "shingle".
What are the main beach's characteristics ?
It is a shingle 16 kilometers long . It extends between West Bay and Portland where it connects the isle to the mainland.
The beach is often identified as a tombolo.
It was created by long shore drift caused by waves' movement. This process, combined with strong coastal currents along this stretch of coast, has deposited the pebbles that make up the beach.
A peculiarity of this beach is that at the Portland end of the beach the pebbles are relatively large, diminishing gradually into a fine shingle at the western end.
At Abbotsbury the shore includes a lagoon named The Fleet.
