Eveline- denotative analysis
The story starts with Eveline sat at the window. She is looking at the few people passing and she is thinking about her difficult situation.
In front of her house there are new houses. The narrator tells the reader the history of that place and connects it with Eveline's life. Eveline looks around and then thinks that she would leave from Dublin. At home she has shelter and food, but away from her house it would be not the same. She does not like her work and she is in a very difficult situation. Her father is violent and she has to give him all her money, hard-earned during the day. She would escape with Frank, her lover, in Buenos Aires with a boat. She thinks that Frank is a very kind, open-hearted person. Escape is the only possible solution to escape from her father. Eveline seems sure of her choice.
The second scene takes place at the pier. Frank and Eveline are near the boat, ready to departure. Eveline seems not sure and Frank incites her but she is unable to decide. She stands at the pier and Frank is on the boat. The ship goes away and the two characters are not together. This is the very sad conclusion of the story.
