Modernism began at the beginning of the 20th century and finished in the 1930. It was in relation with the Victorian age that was inadequate, because many fears were shared and many hopes collapsed.

For example Modernism did not believe to technological progress, because man was submitted to machine and it did not believe to utility and teaching of literature.

Besides industrial developing crated wealth, but it did not create wellbeing. And it caused not faith in liberalism and progress. Besides Darwin’s theory of selection caused failing of the faith in religion values. Men did not believe to be generated from God and they did not believe to God’s values. Therefore men believed in theirselves. This had notice in literature. Techniques of narration changed: there was not an omniscient narrator who tells events, conversations, description and personal opinions, but the shift of the point of view, the monologue and the stream of consciousness. The shift of the point of view is when the characters tell the story and they express the narrator’s opinions, monologue expresses what the characters think and the stream of consciousness expresses thoughts that are in the mind, but they are not organized. Besides characters of the novel were old men, because they had experience in life and the plot was minimum.

In addition the conception of time changed and it began simultaneous. The past, the present and the future coexisted. That was caused also with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

Einstein said that space and time were not separated and the changed connecting with the point of view of the observer.
