The Modern Age covered the period from 1890 to 1930 and it developed in Europe.
In that period, the Victorian ethic principles changed, as a consequence of the Darwinism, religious values were refused. The only sure point of reference for the individual was himself, he was who decided what was right and what was wrong.
The industrial revolution caused the distrust on progress, in fact man realized that the development didn't bring wellness but it caused men's and children's exploitation.
Also literature was affected by the crisis, the new techniques consisted on the use of the ‘shift of the point of view' and on the use of monologues, so the reader had the impression to be on the characters' mind, and as a consequence the plot was reduced.
Concerning philosophy Bergson and James rejected conventional ideas of time, they asserted that exist three types of time: chronological, philosophical (how people perceive it) and verb tense ( present, past, future).
Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity put into questions basic principles, it affirmed that space ad time did not exist as separate but changed according to the point of view of the observer.
